MASTERCLASS with PEDRO CORDAS Skill level required: High intermediate/advanced: meaning that this workshop assumes a solid intermediate knowledge and working experience of suspension concepts and safety, a functional boxtie and line management. Dress code: Rope Friendly for both rigger and model What to bring: People should be advised to bring carabiners for this workshop even if they usually use a ring, and 10 lengths (or more) of 8m jute or hemp rope. Water and light snacks are available on the venue. Maximum number of people: 10 pairs. Due to time constraints, participants will not be able to switch roles during the workshop. Biography of Pedro: My decade-plus obsession with rope started in 2003 with Osada Steve at Studio 6, Tokyo. In 2004, a new journey began when I had classes with Nawashi Akechi Denki Sensei. After the sensei’s death (2005-07-17), I continued to study with Nawashi Kanna (formerly Akechi Kanna) – both of whom remain strong influences today in my style. I frequently travel to Japan to keep alive my passion of rope studies and research. Since there are so many rope salons in Tokyo with so many talented rope people that if one keeps one’s heart and eyes open, one will definitely learn a lot about Japan and its rope culture. This amazing odyssey in kinbaku has allowed me to meet/see/learn from so many great people; such as Yukimura Haruki, Nureki Chimuo, Naka Akira, Randa Mai, Miura Takumi, Hajime Kinoko to quote just a few… Recently I started to look more closely to Naka Akira’s style, especially after a workshop with him at Berlin’s “Schwelle 7″ in January 2014. I also investigate a lot of Hojojutsu patterns and history. Over the years I have performed mainly in Portugal (residing in Lisbon) but also have made appearances across Europe (including the famed “London Festival of the Art of Japanese Bondage”), U.S. and Japan. I’ve been teaching for several years now, in Portugal, Spain, France, The Netherlands, U.K., Germany and USA. The topics I teach are vast, I usually adjust my classes to the level of the participants – from beginner to experienced. In February 2011, I began a new feature-length film project dedicated to rope communication between people involving some of the most prominent Japanese rope figures (by order of appearance): Naka Akira, Yukimura Haruki, Nawashi Kanna, Urado Hiroshi and Hajime Kinoko. Unique in the view that is shot from a western eye and accessibility but with the good fortune of being an accepted “insider” in the Japanese kinbaku scene. The film 縄話 “jyowa” (communicating through rope / rope stories) started to be screened in NYC in January 2015 in the presence of Naka Akira Sensei.
