Charlotta Carlström, doktor och forskare i ämnet BDSM, har skrivit en artikel som analyserar ritualer och kroppar i BDSM-sammanhang. Hon kommer bl.a. fram till att "BDSM rituals resemble religious rituals and serve the same purposes for the participants. /../ this conclusion can provide a basis to understand why people seek out this kind of communities.
